• Are any Exercises Off Limits?

While some physicians place no limitations on activities for diabetics whose diseases are under control, the American Diabetes. Association advises against certain sports: "Although many athletic endeavors are open to diabetics, certain activities should definitely be avoided in order to prevent harm to yourself or others. Basically, these involve situations where a hypoglycemic reaction could lead to disaster. That's why scuba diving, parachuting, and mountain climbing are less desirable choices for people with diabetes and require much greater care while swimming, hiking, and most team sports are usually fine."
If you are interested in any of these activities, you will want to discuss their appropriateness for you with your own health care team. Your physician will advise you not to exercise if you are ill and to avoid exercising during extremes in weather or on smoggy days. You will be reminded to drink enough water to replace liquids lost through perspiration.
