Your
physician's goal will be to help you maintain a normal blood glucose level
and to minimize, whenever possible, possible complications of the disease.
While diet is the first line of treatment in non-insulin dependent diabetes,
if your blood sugar level cannot be brought under control that way, a blood
sugar-lowering therapy will be prescribed for you.
If you have insulin-dependent diabetes, your physician will prescribe
insulin in an inject able form or an oral medication as well as a special
diet and exercise program to interact with your diet and life style. Your
individual case will determine which type of insulin will work best for you.
Also, if you have the type of job that makes taking insulin difficult, your
physician may try to prescribe oral medication if he or she believes that it
will be effective for you. Whether you use injected insulin or oral
medication, it is most important that you follow your physician's
instructions regarding diet. Physicians say that the greatest error diabetic
patients can make is to use therapy to reduce blood sugar and then neglect
their diet. The goal of treatment is to preserve your insulin output as much
as possible. You can do this by complying with the diet recommended for you,
getting your weight down to your ideal level, and taking or injecting your
medication as it is prescribed for you.
